I am focusing on how the various cultures present in 19th-century southern California approached education and on the relationship that has always been present between education and religion.  I intend to research further into the attitudes of precontact Indian tribes in California toward education, as well as the Spanish mission system, Mexico's attempts to promote education in California, and the statewide school system eventually put in place after California became an American state.  I am also interested in how education changed as the United States evolved from an agrarian society into an industrial giant.
