University of California, Riverside

Department of History

We think this is a pretty good reason to study History. History stresses an understanding of changes that take place in society over time and explores the implications this change has for the present and the future.

The study of history is as useful as it is fascinating. History majors develop an ability to communicate well and they gain the capacity to think clearly and analytically.

Because the study of History stresses change over time, and provides the tools for understanding a rapidly changing world, many of those planning graduate work find history an excellent preparation for professional schools such as law and business administration.

For those planning a legal career, history classes provide a strong background in the development of legal and political institutions. A major in history also prepares students for graduate study in a broad range of careers in business, government and foreign affairs, and any other career that values written and verbal skills. History majors are encouraged to study abroad as part of their program.
