Rebecca Kugel (BA, English, University of Iowa, 1974; MA, History, University of California, Los Angeles, 1978; Ph.D., History, University of California, Los Angeles, 1986) teaches Native American history at the University of California, Riverside. She is of Ojibwe and Shawnee descent as well as French, Irish, German, Jewish and Danish ancestry. Her research interests include the Native peoples of the western Great Lakes, particularly the Ojibwes. She has written on Ojibwe political systems and governance in the nineteenth century, Native women’s history, and the cultural constructions of race among Great Lakes Native peoples.  She is the author of To Be the Main Leaders of Our People: A History of Minnesota Ojibwe Politics, 1825-1898 (1998) and, with Lucy Eldersveld Murphy, co-editor of the anthology Native Women’s History in Eastern North America before 1900; a Guide to Research and Writing (2007). She is currently working on a book on the cultural constructions of race, kinship and social difference among Great Lakes Native peoples.
