Ph.D., Columbia University, 1996

Areas of specialization: social and cultural history of middle and late imperial China.

Biography

Lucille Chia received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in Chinese history from Columbia University. Her current research includes studies on the role of books and publishing in late imperial China, a topic inspired by work on the social history of the book being done for Europe and the U.S. and the possibilities for comparisons. Her book, Printing for Profit: The Commercial Publishers of Jianyang, Song-Ming (960-1644) has recently been published by Harvard University Asia Center Publications. She currently has two different research projects. The first concerns the early history of Chinese migration to various parts of Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, and the socioeconomic impact of this diaspora on coastal regions of China from which the emigrants came. This study represents one aspect of her interest in the history of migration of various Chinese groups, both within China and abroad. The second project, on the printing of Chinese Buddhist scriptures and ephemera (prayer sheets, talismans, etc.) continues her work on the transmission of knowledge in imperial China.

Research Interests

Socioeconomic and cultural History of late imperial China (Song to mid-Qing Dynasties: tenth to nineteenth centuries). including book and print culture, domestic and overseas migration to Southeast Asia, and trade networks in the East and Southeast Asia from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries
